Confidentiality, professional ethics, and the client's safety are of primary importance in counselling relationships. Anything conversations between the clients and their counsellor is kept private and strictly confidential. No one needs to know you are even seeing a counsellor.
Before releasing any information to others, including an employer, a client must sign and give written consent to the chosen counsellor.
A client's situation may be discussed with other counsellors during the consultation; however, no identifying information will be revealed for safety. In certain situations, there are some exceptions to this: child maltreatment, child abuse, child neglect, criminal offences, or risks to oneself or others must be reported in accordance with laws. In such a situation, social workers or counsellors are required to report to the appropriate authority and must comply with providing information to the court.
